A full head of hair has about 100,000 to 150,000 hairs, and it's normal to lose up to 100 hairs each day. Advanced hair loss is different from normal shedding, and millions of people experience it — about 40 million men and 20 million women in the United States alone. It's estimated that 95 percent of these cases of hair loss are due to heredity, but there are other causes of serious hair loss, too. Much has been learned in recent years about the underlying mechanisms of hair loss. If you are considering permanent hair replacement / transplant surgery, contact our practice, serving Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa, and surrounding areas, to learn more.

Your hair has two parts: the hair strand (shaft) that you can see and the follicle. The follicle is a sac of skin tissue below the surface of your scalp. The hair grows out of the follicle. The follicle is where the unique characteristics of your hair are determined — whether it's thick or thin, straight/wavy/kinky/curly, and dry or oily. The follicle is alive; the hair shaft is not — your hair is composed of cells that have no regenerative properties.
At any given time, 90 percent of your hair is in its growth phase (which lasts an average of 4 to 5 years), and the rest is in its resting phase (which lasts for 2 to 4 months). At the end of its resting phase, a hair falls out and is replaced by a new hair. With advanced hair loss, the hair follicles sprout thinner and thinner hairs until nothing regrows, and the follicles eventually wither away. Hair transplants, at the Minnesota or other offices of Reese Hair Restoration, are just one of the options for treating advanced hair loss.

There are four main causes of hair loss: heredity (or genetics), stress, autoimmune response, and chemical damage. Hair replacement transplant surgery at our Minnesota, South Dakota, or Iowa offices may or may not be appropriate as a treatment for a given hair loss condition; please contact Dr. Robert Reese for a personal consultation regarding your particular circumstances.

The most common form of severe hair loss is called "androgenic alopecia." "Alopecia" simply means "hair loss," and "androgenic" means "dependent on androgen," a male hormone. Testosterone is an androgen. The higher the level of androgen hormones a person has, the more hair loss that occurs. Although the exact cause of this type of hair loss is unknown, researchers have established that this natural, age-related hair loss is directly related to the body’s androgen hormones.
The hair of your older male relatives can give you a general idea of how your own hair loss will progress. If it becomes apparent to you that you're going to lose too much of your hair, you might want to consider permanent hair replacement / transplant surgery at the Minnesota or other offices of Reese Hair Restoration as just one of your options; contact us to discuss your unique case. Nothing should stop you from obtaining the fuller, more natural head of hair or the youthful, more vigorous look you desire. Give yourself the social and professional advantage you thought you had lost.

Significant stress in a person's life can trigger the hair follicles to enter the resting phase prematurely. This hair loss may appear when someone is chronically stressed, or it may follow a sudden or acute episode of stress by a period of several months. The hair lost can usually grow back once the stressful condition fades.
Hair loss can also occur because of stress to the hair itself, such as that incurred by excessive brushing/styling/washing, or by the habit of pulling on the hair. There's also a psychological disorder, trichotillomania, wherein a person obsessively pulls out his or her healthy hairs.

About one in every 100 people in the United States develops alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder in which antibodies in one's body attack hair follicles. The initial pattern of hair loss in this disease typically shows circular, smooth areas on the top/back of the head, but other hairy areas on the body can also be affected. The hair loss can be rather sudden, and it can progress to a state of complete baldness and even the loss of all body hair. The hair regrows in some cases, whereas in other cases there will be a relapse.

Some medications, chemicals, and disease treatments cause destruction of the hair follicle. This is most commonly seen among cancer patients who've undergone chemotherapy treatment. Chemicals and radiation are administered to kill "bad" cells that cause cancer or other disease, and it is thought that some "good" cells such as those feeding the hair follicles are also inadvertently destroyed. When the disease treatment stops, hair commonly grows again.

Extensive hair loss can have a devastating emotional impact on a woman. Although the sight of bald or balding men is common and accepted in our society, a woman with severe hair loss may feel like she is abnormal and somehow lacking. Female-pattern hair loss also has some different aspects to it. Whereas the male pattern is to have a receding hairline or a bald patch starting at the crown, women tend to experience thinning of all of their hair at once. However, permanent hair replacement with hair transplants and other hair loss alternatives are just as helpful for women as they are for men. Contact our practice in Minnesota, South Dakota, and Iowa today for more information about these options.
Whether your hair loss is due to heredity, stress, an autoimmune response, medical treatment, or any other reason, don't lose hope. We offer many hair loss treatments, including permanent hair replacement / transplant surgery, at our Minnesota and other Midwest offices. Contact Reese Hair Restoration today for a consultation.
