Rob Vierling

Q: How did this all start for you?

Rob - I had a thinning hair problem since I was 25. It had been bothering me and one day, I heard about Dr. Reese on the radio.

Q: That must have been on the sports station.

Rob –that's correct - I'm a big sports fan. I liked what Dr.  Reese told me. I've had two transplant sessions. The first went
great so I decided on another one.

Surgical, Laser, Pharmaceutical and Herbal Hair Loss
Treatment Options / Hair Transplant Costs in Minnesota
and the Upper Midwest

Each human head of hair is as distinctive as a fingerprint. From the pattern of your hairline, to the color, curl, and contrast between your hair and scalp, your head of hair is unique in the world. No single hair restoration strategy or hair loss treatment works best for everyone. At Reese Hair Restoration in Minnesota, South Dakota, and Iowa, Dr. Robert Reese will explain every option available for your particular type of hair and hair loss pattern. He will create a customized recommendation based on your unique hair restoration needs, goals, and expectations.

A full range of hair loss treatment options is available at all of the offices of Reese Hair Restoration: surgical techniques, laser therapy, non-surgical alternatives, and natural hair loss treatment options. We can help you understand hair transplant costs and other relevant information. Contact our Minnesota, South Dakota, or Iowa locations today to learn more.

Hair Loss Treatment Planning

Your hair loss treatment plan starts with an evaluation of the "four C's" of hair restoration:

  • Color contrast between hair and scalp
  • Caliber of hair
  • Curl of hair
  • Characteristics of your facial structure and hair loss pattern

Based on this evaluation, Dr. Reese can develop a customized treatment plan to help each patient reach their individual hair restoration goals.

Surgical Hair Loss Treatment

A surgical hair loss treatment should be performed by someone with the artistry, skill, and precision to recreate your natural hairline. Meticulous attention to developing the hairline pattern, as well as dissection, angulations, and placement of every follicle, is essential to obtain the best of both worlds — naturalness and density. If a surgical hair loss treatment is right for you, Dr. Reese will generally recommend one of the following techniques to be completed at our Minnesota, South Dakota, or Iowa offices:

  • State-of-the-art microscopic Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)
  • Multi-Unit Grafting (MUG) – a technique used to create greater hair density
  • Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) – ideal for very short hair styles

You may already know which hair loss treatment is right for you. If not, read on, or contact our Minnesota / South Dakota / Iowa offices for an in-depth consultation.

Microscopic Follicular Unit Transplantation

The term "follicular unit transplantation" is a bit unwieldy, but it's actually pretty straightforward: in this procedure, your follicular units are transplanted. Follicles are tiny sacs of skin tissue under your scalp. A "follicular unit" is made of a single follicle plus the hair or hairs that grow out of the follicle. The follicular unit could thus be composed of a follicle plus one, two, three or more hairs; that's the way that everyone's hair naturally grows, in bundles of different numbers of hairs. All of the parts of the follicular unit share the same blood supply.

Hair transplants used to involve taking many follicular units out at one time, in grafts (patches). Scarring and unnatural-looking hair results were frequently the outcome. Years of research and clinical practice have resulted in refinements in the transplantation technology that take the process to its logical conclusion — placing single follicular units, using microscopes for dissection. Great skill, patience, and a high level of artistry are required to do FUT well. As a board-certified surgeon who is also certified by the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery, Dr. Reese has all of these qualities.

The FUT Procedure

In a follicular unit transplant procedure, a thin, shallow strip of follicular units is taken from the fringe of hair on the back/bottom of the patient's scalp. The two sides of the scalp where this donor strip is taken from are closed with sutures. The follicular units are removed from the strip by several staff assistants, using microscopes or magnification to dissect each single unit. The follicular units are then transplanted into the desired area. An experienced surgeon such as Dr. Reese can be expected to do the best job of transplanting the follicular units in an effective and natural-looking manner.

The units are placed randomly, as nature placed them originally; no "doll-hair" look will ever occur. Depending on the amount of donor follicles available and the final density desired, the number of follicular units transplanted could range from 2,000 to 3,000 or more. However, not every patient requires a "massive" transplant to achieve their individual goals. This is another reason why you should have your individualized surgical plan created by the surgeon directly, like Dr. Reese, as opposed to a non-medical "consultant". It's a meticulous and labor-intensive process, taking into account your unique facial structure, hairline pattern, and the angulation and placement of each follicular unit.

The transplanted hair retains its genetic characteristics — it looks the same, feels the same, and continues to grow for the rest of your life. No special grooming or styling is required. Only a very thin scarline {typically only 1 to 2 mm wide} is left where the donor strip was removed. The donor incision is invisible if the surrounding hair is about 1/2" long.

The FUT is completed in one session — that's all it takes to transplant the available donor follicles, restoring a fuller head of hair. Find out whether you're an appropriate candidate for follicular unit transplantation as a hair loss treatment: contact us at the Minnesota, Iowa, or South Dakota offices of Reese Hair Restoration today.

Multi-Unit Grafting (MUG)

Multi-unit grafting captures more than one follicular unit in each graft. This technique is used to create greater hair density. Ask Dr. Reese if this technique is appropriate for you.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

Follicular unit extraction is ideal for very short hair styles. Follicular units are removed (as in FUT), but they're removed individually using a tiny surgical punch (e.g., 0.75 to 1.00 mm). Only the most superficial layer of the skin on the scalp is removed. The follicular units are transplanted, and the scars left are very tiny round spots; thus, if a patient prefers to keep a very short hairstyle or a shaved head, the scars are less visible than the thin line left by FUT.

Natural Hair Loss Treatment

Reese Hair Restoration offers several non-surgical hair loss treatments that have been shown to effectively reduce hair loss and/or stimulate hair growth. Laser hair therapy, Propecia®, Rogaine®, and herbal treatments can help stop hair loss in many people, and may even restore thinning hair.

Laser Hair Therapy
LLLT - Low Level Laser Therapies

Hair loss, in men and women, can be successfully treated with low-level laser therapy. Laser therapy is an alternative for patients who may not be ready to proceed with hair transplant surgery, and for patients concerned about the possible side effects of hair loss medications. In LLLT, "cool" laser energy is delivered to the scalp, increasing the blood supply and stimulating the follicles. Stronger and thicker hair can result: LLLT has been shown to stop the progression of hair loss in about 90 percent of patients treated.

LLLT can also be used after hair transplant surgery, to enhance the healing process and help the transplanted hair thrive. The LLLT system used at Reese Hair Restoration is the state-of-the-art Sunetics Clinical Laser System. A patient undergoes 15-minute sessions sitting under a laser unit, over a 6- to 12-month treatment period. To find out whether laser hair therapy as a natural hair loss treatment is right for you, contact Reese Hair Restoration in Minnesota / Iowa / South Dakota today.

Propecia®

Propecia® was approved by the FDA in 1998 to treat mild-to-moderate hair loss in men only. In a controlled study, two-thirds of the men who were treated with Propecia® maintained or slightly improved the quality of their hair, whereas all of the subjects who were given a placebo lost hair. Propecia® is taken by mouth once daily, and is available by prescription only.

It may take up to three months for the benefits of taking Propecia® to show, and Propecia® can only work over the long term if it is taken indefinitely; the website for Propecia®, www.propecia.com, notes that a man taking Propecia® will probably lose the hair he's gained if he stops taking it.

Rogaine®

Rogaine® is a topically applied fluid that can stabilize hair loss in both men and women. It's an FDA-approved hair loss treatment used twice a day to reduce hair loss and possibly regrow hair. There are men's and women's versions of Rogaine® products, both available over-the-counter.

New growth and a greater volume of hair are noted after about four months of steady use in people for whom Rogaine® is effective. The main ingredient in Rogaine®, minoxidil, is the only FDA-approved ingredient clinically proven to regrow hair.

Herbal Therapy

As a complement to surgical hair restoration and to truly customize your natural hair loss treatment, we also recommend herbal therapy for our patients who prefer a natural approach.

At Reese Hair Restoration, we can advise you regarding the pros and cons of low level laser therapy Propecia®, Rogaine®, and herbal remedies as hair loss treatment options. Our Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota staff is ready to answer all of your questions. Contact us now for a consultation.

Hair Systems (also known as toupees/wigs)

Generally, hair systems are a good option for patients with significant hair loss who want full scalp coverage along with significant hair density. Hair systems do require costly ongoing maintenance and special grooming for a natural appearance. As part of our wide range of natural hair loss treatment services for our patients in the Minnesota and Upper Midwest region, Reese Hair Restoration can refer you to very reputable providers of human hair systems who will ensure a natural, healthy look for your hair.
